One of key trends in NGNs is the transformation of transport networks. Requests for more and more bandwidth for business and residential users, as well as requests for more flexible business services and additional services for broadband subscribers (the Triple-Play services concept) indicate that Ethernet technology is the most effective solution for all these requirements. The convergence of telecommunications services over the IP network is a trend that has been present for some time.
Data Metro Ethernet networks today are extending from access networks (for example, the Iskratel SI3000 MSAN) up to regional and metro (metropolitan) networks. Providers offer Ethernet transport services over the biggest national and international networks. Usually, the majority of the provider’s Ethernet networks are built on a regional principle and for Ethernet transport networks the most commonly used term is Metro Ethernet.
Benefits
Technical:
- Good flexibility to support both broadband network architecture models: centralized and distributed,
Support for both business and residential subscribers’ services,
- Easy additional feature like multicast VLAN registration and private-port functionality for the efficient and secure provisioning of services,
- Brand-name devices used in the Metro and Core solutions.
Financial:
- Optimized aggregation network cost,
- Increased quality of service,
- Optimization of network and service performance.
Solution description
Metro networks represent one of the key parts of modern networks, performing aggregation of the traffic of residential users. They ensure the direct connection of business users, for which they offer connection services between different business locations.
The Data Metro Network is based on IP/Ethernet (or Ethernet/MPLS - VPLS) technology and provides the following services:
- Aggregation of MSANs (aggregating traffic from the remote or centrally located MSANs),
- L2 network services for data (bridging for IPoE or PPPoE to the BRAS/BNG),
- Designing L2 or L3 networks for video services and residential telephony,
- L2 access network for L3 VPN (access for business subscribers, VLAN per user or PPPoE),
- L2 VPN business services (E-Line – Point-to-point, E-LAN, multipoint-to-multipoint, second VLAN tagging on the access interfaces, Q-in-Q tunneling).
The Data Core Network is based on the IP and MPLS protocols. The basic services of this network are:
- Providing broadband access to the internet,
- IP VPN (MPLS-VPN) for business intranet and partners (extranet)
- Broadband data wholesale – L2TP or MPLS-VPN.
