About 5G Safety project

In the period from 2020 to 2030, the future of 5G broadband critical communications networks and broadband services and applications to be used by public security, security and rescue organizations (PPDRs) will be decided at the European level. After 2030, narrowband networks based on narrowband technologies (TETRA / DMR / GSM-R) are expected to decline. The first commercial use of 5G PPDR technologies is expected after 2021.

5GSafety will focus on reliable 5G-ready communications and applications using new and improved interaction modalities for citizens and professionals of the Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PDPR) domain. This is to support vital business operations, which if they fail, there would be serious implications on business and operational levels as well as on society as a whole and on users individually. All of the above mentioned focus areas are addressed to SRIP Smart Cities and Communities, subsection Security.

The strategic objective of 5GSafety is to deliver research and innovation towards a new generation of 5G-ready products and services tailored to the needs of the PPDR sector. The aim is to investigate and design new architectures and key enabling technologies to deliver an advanced telco-grade Dispatcher as a Service (DPaaS) offered to PPDR professional and a new generation of user-centred applications for personal safety of citizens, and to investigate strategies for implementation of such applications in a virtualised and shared 5G environment with ensured safety, privacy and backward compatibility with current PPDR communication systems.

5GSafety is unique in bringing together a winning ecosystem of Slovenian 5G PPDR players to address realistic challenges and expectations, and consequently secure the success and sustainability of the project. This includes consortium members that are leading players in research, innovation and technology provisioning in 5G, public safety, security and commercial ICT sectors, and a landscape of key Slovenian PPDR stakeholders and the Slovenian National Regulation Authority.
